Major report: Challenges to achieving equality for LGBT
Tue, 10 May 2016 12:51:00 BST
A team based at the University of Huddersfield provided research analysis and report-writing for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, addressing the role of professionals in supporting LGBT people’s citizenship across the EU. Based on over 1000 interviews carried out in 19 EU Member States, the report shows how LGBT people face many obstacles in daily life, including threats to safety, unequal access to healthcare, and bullying in schools. This research focused on the drivers and barriers such frontline officers face when doing their job. It was the first time ever that public officials, teachers, doctors, nurses and law enforcement officers in 19 EU Member States were interviewed about their experiences and views on efforts to protect and promote the rights of LGBT people. The findings demonstrate the commitment that many professionals have to making life better for LGBT people, but also highlight areas of difficulty, across different countries. The report is available to download from fra.europa.eu/en/publication/2016/professional-views-lgbt-equality
