April, fourth coldest

ice ‌IT was the fourth coldest April since our records began with the monthly temperature 1.6°C below the average figure expected for the time of year.  Rainfall was slightly above average.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the Applied Sciences Weather Station.

The monthly mean temperature was 7.65°C (average 9.26°C) making it the fourth coldest April since our records began.  The warmest day of the month was Sunday 3rd with an average temperature of just 11.6°C, this made it the coldest warmest day since our records began, the average for April is 14.68°C.  The maximum temperature of 17.4°C was recorded on Thursday 21st.  The coldest day of the month was shared by Saturday 16th and Thursday 28th with an average temperature of 3.9°C.  The lowest minimum temperature was -0.2°C recorded on both Saturday 9th and Saturday 16th.  The temperature fell below zero on two days of the month.

A total of 62.4mm of rainfall was recorded during the month compared to the average figure for April of 54.6mm.  The wettest day of the month was Thursday 28th with 16.2mm of rainfall (26% of the month’s total).  Ten days of the month had no rain with the driest spell falling between Sunday 17th and Friday 22nd inclusive.

The mean wind speed for the month was 10.3km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 22.7km/hr recorded on Wednesday 6th; the highest maximum gust of 101.88km/hr was also recorded on this day.

The prevailing wind direction for the month was south west
