On 15th June 2016 FEGReG members and students attended a spirited seminar on 'Financial expert CEOs and earnings management around IPOs' presented by former Huddersfield student Dimitrios Gounopoulos. Reporting on research conducted in collaboration with Hang Pham at the University of Sussex, Dimitrios, now Professor Gounopoulos, Ihighlighted the importance of CEO financial experience in the provision of high quality financial reporting. His research suggests that financial expert CEOs are less likely to engage in earnings management than non-financial expert CEOs. Financial expert CEOs also tend to be informative in financial reporting in order to allow investors to properly gauge the fair value of the firm. Professor Gounopoulos encouraged interruptions and members and students took full advantage to interrogate him on his research, with conversations continuing after the seminar itself. He commented on how greatly he enjoyed the experience - and that he also felt somewhat emotional to be back in his ‘beloved’ Huddersfield.

Professor Gounopoulos has held posts in the Business Schools of the Universities of Sussex, Surrey and Manchester and is currently Professor (Chair) in Finance at the University of Newcastle. His main research interest lies in the areas of International Accounting and Corporate Finance and he specialises in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), publishing widely on these topics in well-respected international journals. Funded research on the first ever IPO listed - the maritime company VOC which was listed in 1602 - has fostered a historical perspective in his work and this informs his role as an independent IPO consultant. He also maintains strong links with the London and Amsterdam Stock Exchanges.
