Huddersfield looks set for top 20 position for teaching

THE University of Huddersfield is poised to become established as one of the UK’s top teaching institutions and the best in Yorkshire when the Government introduces a new system for appraising student satisfaction with their courses and success at landing employment after graduation.
When Universities Minister Jo Johnson announced a new Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), he stated that “to meet students’ high expectations of their university years and to deliver the skills our economy needs, we need a renewed focus on teaching”.
While the mechanism for the TEF is still being finalised, the leading journal Times Higher Education (THE) has published the results of an in-depth exercise that predicts the likely outcome of the Excellence Framework.

The Times Higher “TEF Table” has now been published and places the University of Huddersfield at 17th out of 120 institutions that were assessed. This puts it ahead of many famous universities, including Oxford.
The Times Higher produced its rankings by compiling official data for student satisfaction, for the proportion of students who complete their courses, and for the numbers who go into graduate-level jobs or postgraduate study, a key category in which Huddersfield attained sixth place nationwide.
The findings from all three categories were collated to produce the league table that positions Huddersfield well within the UK top-20 and top in the region for teaching excellence – eight ahead of the next-best placed, Leeds University.
The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Thornton (pictured right), said that the results of the Times Higher Teaching Excellence Framework table are “a real reason to celebrate”.
“This ranking reflects how hard we have been working to provide students with the best university experience possible.”
“We have such high student satisfaction levels because we have invested very heavily in services for our students, and in our campus, which is one of the best in the country.
“The quality of our teaching staff is excellent and their own academic research and teaching complement each other. We are also really proud to see graduate employment scoring right up there in the top ten nationally.”
