Our Languages Festival is coming up and our programme is becoming fuller by the day! We have lots of stimulating events that have now been confirmed.

Our morning highlights include sessions on aspects of English Language and Linguistics such as exploring language through the Brontë novels with showings of international versions of ‘Wuthering Heights’ in Japanese and Spanish. There are also a number of academic talks from University staff such as Dr Erica Gold, who will be giving a talk on ‘Field Linguistics’ and Professor Dan McIntyre who will be speaking about the history of English.

Moving into the afternoon, there are a number of concerts by music students performing pieces such as ‘Les pêcheurs de perles’ (The Pearl Fishers) by Georges Bizet, ‘L'ho perduta, me meschina’ from Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) by Mozart, and ‘Duo des fleurs/Sous le dôme épais’ (Flower Duet) from Lakmé by Léo Delibes.

There are also a number of language taster sessions on offer giving you the chance to experience different languages such as French, Arabic, Chinese and Italian as well as an insight into British Sign Language.

In the evening, we present two sessions for language teachers - one which looks at problems Spanish teachers may encounter in the classroom, providing information on the support the Spanish Embassy Education Office is currently offering to schools and teachers (by Natalio Ormeno Villajos); and 'Practical ideas to integrate films into the language classroom' from Ana Valbuena Garcia.

The festival will conclude with a concert from Berlin-based brass ensemble ‘Apparat’. The concert starts at 7.30pm and will take place in St Paul’s Hall. This concert is a paid event.

You can find the full programme here, including information on venues and how to book.

Admission to each event is free (excluding the evening concert).
