The new year continues with our staff travelling the world giving lectures and contributing their research to further education.
Professor Liza Lim - Professor of Composition, Director of CeReNeM
Prof Liza Lim visited Stanford University, USA from 12 - 15 January as part of the programme of CeReNeM's International Research Network. She gave a public lecture on 12 January at CCRMA (Centre for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics) as a guest of the composition department.
The topic of the talk was 'Composition as Hunting' which considered how the perspectival shifts from local to global structural levels that are part of Lim's compositional practice are akin to the multiple forms of attention that are engaged in 'hunting'. More can be found out about this here.
Prof Lim also met with the postgraduate composition students and gave six individual supervision sessions. She remarks “It was interesting to encounter the diversity of the work that students were engaged in and I very much enjoyed the vitality of the conversations that we had. I was also able to have exchanges with the composition faculty, notably Prof Brian Ferneyhough who was one of my composition teachers when I was studying in Amsterdam in 1987 as well as Professors Mark Applebaum and Jarek Kapuscinkski”.
We hope to set up opportunities for further staff and student exchanges in future. Prof Ferneyhough is in fact no stranger to the University of Huddersfield having been a guest of the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music a number of times, his most recent visit being in November 2015. He attended a concert given by PhD guitarist Diego Castro as well as the launch of Diego's CD on CeReNeM's HCR label which features Prof Ferneyhough's 'Kurze Schatten II', a classic of 20th Century guitar repertoire.'
