Journalism and Media Senior Lecturer Deirdre O’Neill has been offered a Visiting Fellowship at the University of Karlstad, Sweden, next year (2017) at the Ander Centre for Research on News and Opinion in the Digital Era.
Deirdre will contribute to a broad research programme titled, “What if the press disappears?” This research programme has two parts, the first one focused on media/news audiences. The second focusses partly on the various groups of actors who actively work to disemminate socio-politically relevant information and who engage in public opinion formation (such as political parties, state and municipal authorities) and partly on the new actors who have emerged as de facto producers of socio-politically relevant information in a new media landscape (for example, activist groups and citizen journalists). The work will involve research and related activities, such as postgraduate teaching.
Deirdre says, “I was delighted to receive this invitation. It is a wonderful opportunity to develop my research and to work with leading scholars in the digital journalism field.”
Head of School Paul Ward added, “Karlstad University's invitation to Deirdre O'Neill is an international recognition of her research and the work of Journalism and Media at the University of Huddersfield.”
