A new marketing campaign for fast food brand Rustlers was the focus for seven Marketing students who were taking part in the finals of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Pitch competition recently. The three teams (Huddersfield was the only University with 3 teams to successfully reach the finals) travelled down to the CIM Conference Centre near Maidenhead to present their ideas to a panel of 6 Marketing Directors along with 15 teams from other universities. Final year students from Huddersfield’s Team Red had the daunting task of kicking the event off with an excellent presentation and all done without notes.

Eighteen teams were involved in the final event, so it was a long day, especially with the 2 Huddersfield Second Year teams presenting their campaigns later in the afternoon. Second Year student Emily Rushworth of Team ‘Em & Em’ felt that experience gained in the event was a real bonus: “"Having the opportunity to take part in a national competition at the home of the CIM has opened up more doors for me. It allowed me to network with other successful students and marketing professionals as well as enabling me to boost my confidence. I now know what it takes to create a professional marketing plan and pitch it to a panel of six marketing executives representing some of the most successful companies. I would encourage anybody to take the opportunities that the University offers as it was an amazing experience and has inspired me to strive further to succeed in my marketing career."

Course Leader, Glynis Jones, commented: "All our students gave great performances and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, we are very proud of them". Kepak Convenience FoodsBrand Manager Atiyya Tailor remarked how “Every presentation was well structured, professional, creative and of agency standard which is commendable. A huge thanks for helping us to address the Rustlers challenge.”

Our accreditation with the CIM brings lots of advantages to our students including low cost membership, an option to take professional qualifications alongside their degree, access to a wide range of events and resources  and the opportunity to have a CIM mentor to help them progress into a career in marketing.
