“Tsunami Risk Assessment and Mitigation for the Indian Ocean: Knowing your Tsunami risk – and what to do about it” - Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Manuals and Guides 52 has been published. The purpose of the revised Guidelines is to further facilitate the implementation of tsunami risk assessment and reduction by IOC Member States. An expert group within WG1 has prepared the Guidelines. They are intended to be user-oriented and, although focused on the Indian Ocean region, they are relevant to tsunami risk assessment and reduction at the global scale. University of Huddersfield’s Global Disaster Resilience Centre Professors Dilanthi Amaratunga & Richard Haigh and Dr Chamindi Malalgoda were part of this team and actively contributed towards this very important UNESCO initiative.  These guidelines have been formally approved by all the ICG/IOTWS member states and will be formally adopted in their respective countries.

This manual was developed by the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWS) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)of UNESCO.The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) received a mandate by its Member States to facilitate the expansion of global coverage of tsunami warning systems following the disastrous Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004 and accordingly, the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWS) was formed

in response to the tragic tsunami on December 26th 2004, in which over 250,000 lives were lost around the Indian Ocean region.  The IOC Assembly, during its twenty-third Session (21-30 June 2005), formally established the ICG/IOTWS.

According to IOC Resolution XXIII-12 membership in ICG/IOTWS include: Member States of the IOC bordering the Indian Ocean; Observers from other IOC Member States; and Invited observers from other organizations (including NGO’s), programmes and projects in accordance with the IOC rules and procedures.
