Enterprise Development graduate Peter Shaw puts fitness first for his first business venture
THE amount of information available for people who want to partake in diets and exercise is vast and can often be contradictory. Huddersfield Enterprise Development graduate, Peter Shaw, is looking to change all that, with his sports ‘information-hub’ and apparel website, Global Muscle Ltd.
Global Muscle was set up by Peter, who is a fitness enthusiast and with one overall aim, ‘to help each and every person to understand the basics of fitness and help any individual to take control of their health and wellbeing’.
“Global Muscle will break down the whats, whys and hows of exercise, diet and nutrition by demonstrating tried and tested methods,” said Peter.
“I’ve found one of the biggest reasons that people drop out of their routines, is due to a lack of motivation and this website will give people a ‘fitness-family’ that they can go to for advice and information, whilst socialising with like-minded enthusiasts.”
The business, which has been set up with the help of the University’s Enterprise Team, is based in the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre. The team assists enterprising students and recent graduates, like Peter, to develop their business ideas through one-to-one meetings with their business advisors, a series of business skills events and where appropriate, access to proof of concept funding.
Developing Global Muscle isn’t the only thing keeping Peter busy, on graduating this summer Peter secured a 12-week internship with the Enterprise Team itself. He has spent his time conducting research into the enterprise archives at the University to discover where past budding entrepreneurs, who have been through the centre, are now.
This has stood him in good stead for the future, as over the next twelve months he will be going on to postgraduate research, by taking a full-time Master’s of Enterprise (MEnt) within the University’s Business School. He was awarded the Vice-Chancellors Fee Waiver for the opportunity to undertake a Master’s, which is only offered to those students achieving marks over 80%.
“For my MEnt, I’m going to focus my research on new venture creation degrees, like the BA (Hons) Enterprise Development degree at the University of Huddersfield,” said Peter, “and why these are rising in popularity,” he added.
Although Peter will be primarily leaving the University as an undergraduate, the Huddersfield Enterprise Society, which he set up with fellow entrepreneurs Gemma Humphris and Sam Forrest, will continue to inspire future entrepreneurs by bringing like-minded business minds together for many years to come.
