Testing times for Dr Laura Waters

Principle Enterprise Fellow Dr Laura Waters lent her expertise to Channel 5’s Gadget Show this week, helping the programme’s presenters Jason Bradbury and Jon Bentley test gadget based alternatives to visiting a spa for professional beauty treatments.
Dr Waters used an instrument to measure skin softness and firmness before and after the treatments, to compare the effectiveness of a traditional mud treatment against a hi-tech infrared sauna, and an exfoliating face pack against an electronic microderm device.
This is the latest in a string of media appearances for Dr Waters, who has provided scientific perspectives to programmes such as Channel 4’s Superscrimpers and the BBC’s Watchdog programme, as well as contributing to discussions on Sky News and BBC Radio.
The science of the skin is one of the areas which Laura researches. She recently published a paper on artificial mimics for skin which can be used to test pharmaceuticals.
