SciFest Yorkshire 2015 is a brand new science fiction festival being held across various venues in Kirklees.

The festival launches on Friday 23 October at 2:00pm with ‘Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982)’ a timeless masterpiece starring Harrison Ford in The Top Club Sheepridge, Huddersfield. Admission is free.

Out of This World: SciFest Launch will be held in the Creative Arts Building, University of Huddersfield with live band ‘Stems’ performing to the accompaniment of the 1902 silent move ‘Trip to the moon’ with optional fancy dress. This promises to be a spectacular festival launch. There will be a £1 entry fee which can be refunded with any bar sales.

The festival has something to offer for everyone of all ages! Dr Who author Mark Wright, who has written many short stories, comic strips and novels, delivers a children’s creative writing workshop of ‘Timey-Wimey Tales’ aimed at 7-12 year olds, before giving a talk that defies space and time, named ‘Time Lords, Monsters and the Worms of Death’.

For those who enjoy reading and writing, Sci-Fi author Justina Robson gives a lecture on genre fiction: the imagination and the creatively lived life at Huddersfield Art Gallery.

Other highlights include ‘HG Wells and the Birth of Science Fiction’ at Tolson Memorial Museum. Merrick Burrow and Allegra Hartley invite you to join them as they explore the Tolson Museum’s collection of natural history and technology, considering the ways in which Wells’ science fiction novels sought to explore the implications of scientific discovery for everyday lives in the 20th Century and beyond.

The festival runs until 1 November with the final day events including a Costume Trail at Tolson Museum where everyone is encouraged to come dressed as their favourite Sci-Fi character!

Throughout Half-Term, those who are fans of the classic War of the Worlds, or are spaced out by the latest blockbuster interstellar, are invited to join forces and come and visit the People’s Show of Sci-Fi collectables. The exhibition runs from October half term until early 2016 to coincide with SciFest Yorkshire.

There’s also a Children’s Sci-Fi Drawing Competition. Kirklees Library holds a programme of special events for the entire family linked to both SciFest Yorkshire and the Big Draw. Submit your entries at any Kirklees Library or the Tolson Museum including a name, age and contact details by Sunday 1 November.
