Making sense of dyslexia

Dyslexia Awareness Week Dyslexia Awareness Week at the University is on Monday 5 October to Friday 9 October 2015 and we will be celebrating this in association with the British Dyslexia Association.

The theme of the 2015 awareness week is ‘Making Sense of Dyslexia’ and it looks at how much of an impact the right support and interventions can now have on the future of people with dyslexia.

It is beneficial for everyone to understand personal strengths and weaknesses and to find ways to develop learning strategies. This can be especially true for people with dyslexia. The earlier this can be done the better as it can boost a dyslexic student’s engagement with their studies and their future employability.

We want to continue to ensure that our students fulfil their future potential and receive the right kind of support from us to do so. Whether a student is aware that they have dyslexia before they come to Huddersfield or is diagnosed once they arrive, there is support on offer to identify the right interventions and adjustments.

Students can arrange an initial meeting with a member of staff from Disability Services at one of our Specific Learning Difficulty Workshops. Here we let students know about booking an Educational Psychologist Assessment and about the support at the University if they are found to have a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia. If students have already had an assessment, they can meet with their individual adviser or attend one of the daily lunch time drop-ins:

Email: disability@hud.ac.uk

Tel: 01484 472227

In person: Wellbeing and Disability Services, Level 4, Student Central

Drop-in: 12.00pm – 1.00pm every day in term time, no appointment necessary

Throughout Dyslexia Awareness Week, there will be a stall in Student Central, near the Students’ Union Shop. There will be a range of information about the support available to students with dyslexia so please go along and help yourself. We are also asking for suggestions about support and interventions which are helpful for students at University and we will publish these on our website after the event.
