Professor Paul Thomas delivered a very successful inaugural lecture last night to a lecture theatre full of staff, current and former students and many interested organisations. Organisations attending included Kirklees Stronger Families, Mahdlo (Oldham Youth Zone), West Yorkshire Police, Bury Youth Service, Rochdale Youth Service and Orangebox (Halifax).

Introduced by former Dean and now Pro-Vice Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) Professor Christine Jarvis, Paul’s lecture considered the role of educational research in this area.  He outlined his considerations about the supposed failure of multiculturalist society (a claim that Paul rejects!), particularly with regard to local experience in the north of England.

His research and publications, including ‘Youth, Multiculturalism and Community Cohesion’, and Responding to the Threat of Violent Extremism’, led to him being asked to give evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee Inquiry on Prevent., national media appearances and continued national and international speeches.  Research has been carried out in Kirklees, Calderdale, Oldham and Rochdale and he offered some of the outcomes and recommendations.
