Economic and Social Research Council logo On 16 July 2015, the first in a series of six seminars exploring Memory, Commemoration and Public Symbolism and dealing with the past in Northern Ireland was held at the University of Huddersfield. The seminar group is led by the Principal Investigator Professor Jim McAuley, Director of the Institute for Research in Citizenship and Applied Human Sciences, who has published extensively on Northern Ireland. The series is funded by a grant of £30,000 from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Scholars from across the UK and Ireland, and at all stages of their careers, were represented at the opening event. Following an introduction by Professor McAuley, the first seminar featured presentations from, among others, Dr Shaun McDaid (Research Fellow) on the relationship between History and Memory in Northern Ireland and Dr Catherine McGlynn (Senior Lecturer in Politics) on the Politics of Memory in comparative perspective.

The Co-Investigators for the series are Dr Graham Spencer (University of Portsmouth), Dr Máire Braniff (Ulster University) and Professor Jon Tonge (University of Liverpool). Joining Professor McAuley as core members of the seminar group are CRISS researchers Dr Andrew Mycock (Reader in Politics), Dr Shaun McDaid and Dr Catherine McGlynn. Commenting on the inaugural seminar, Professor McAuley commended both the ‘high-quality of the presentations and subsequent discussion’, and noted the ongoing relevance of these issues in contemporary Northern Ireland politics and society.
