A TWO-YEAR exhibition programme and public engagement project named ROTOЯ, in partnership with the Huddersfield Art Gallery, has been awarded £84,000 from Arts Council England to continue research into how people engage with contemporary art and design.

ROTOЯ will showcase artists’, designers’ and curators’ ideas and their connective practices, as well as incorporating public events and talks that feature the work of art and design staff from the University.

The new programme begins on 16 October, 2015, with the exhibition Thought Positions in Sculpture curated by Dr Rowan Bailey

Presenting work from ten contemporary artists who have encountered the archive through the stories of their own art practice, the exhibition at the Huddersfield Art Gallery refers to existing works of art from Leeds Museums and Galleries Sculpture Collection, archival material from the Henry Moore Institute, digitised archival material from the Tate Gallery, audio material from the British Library and other archival sites, some of which are inventions by the artist themselves.

Throughout the exhibition the ten artists will be publishing essays on the underlying themes informing the work on display through the Centre for Sculptural Thinking and there will be a public symposium, held at the University’s Heritage Quay on Thursday 12 November, 2015, with talks by the artists, archivist Janette Martin from the Henry Moore Institute and Allison Foster, Archive Curator of the Tate.  Further exhibitions are to follow throughout 2016 and 2017.

Dr Anna Powell and Professor Steve Swindells ROTOЯ began in 2011 when the School of Art, Design and Architecture commenced a formal partnership with the Huddersfield Art Gallery to offer a programme of exhibitions featuring work of its academic staff and their professional practice networks.

“With this next phase of ROTOЯ III and IV, commencing in October 2015,” explained ROTOЯ co-producer Professor Steve Swindells.  “We aim to build on what was learned through ROTOЯ I and II by providing an on-going, multi-layered, stakeholder consultation process with different members of the public, to advise on ways of accessing and interpreting the programme and to help guide its outcome and support its effectiveness and longevity beyond 2017.”
