A new network has been created by academics interested in collaborative research in opera. NORN (the Northern Opera Research Network) brings academics from the Universities of Huddersfield, Leeds and Nottingham together with Opera North and other opera companies large and small to collaborate on research into the multidisciplinary facets of opera – literature, drama, music, scenography and choreography.

Study days, conferences, workshops and performances will all be enlisted to develop the many-faceted aspects of this hugely popular musical medium, encouraging work on practice-related aspects of the operatic experience – its sociology, philosophy, politics, history/historiography, the drama – and of course the music.

Professor Rachel Cowgill has recently sent out a call for papers for the first conference to be held by NORN, which is to take place on 22 and 23 April, at the University of Leeds and in the Heritage Quay at the University of Huddersfield.

The conference will be on the subject of Operatic Immersions and coincides perfectly with the 2016 Opera North Ring Cycle, and delegates will be able to attend a performance of Das Rheingold  at Leeds Town Hall on the evening of 23 April. Keynote speeches will be given by Clemens Risi from the Institut für Theatre- und Meienwissenschaft, Nuremberg, and Rhian Hutchings, Creative Director of OperaSonic, UK.
