The Global Disaster Resilience Centre (GDRC) at Huddersfield, with the support of the British Council Researcher Links programme, conducted a multi-disciplinary workshop to support the development of more resilient coastal communities.
Held in Bandung, Indonesia from 28th October to 1st November, the workshop was co-hosted by GDRC and the Bandung Institute of Technology’s (ITB) Disaster Mitigation Research Centre. The workshop was led by Professor Richard Haigh from GDRC and Dr Harkunti Rahayu from ITB, with support from GDRC experts Professor Dilanthi Amaratunga and Dr Kaushal Keraminiyage.
The workshop brought together experts and early career researchers from 15 institutions in the UK and Indonesia. Through sharing research and experience of different coastal hazards, resilience building and coping mechanisms, the workshop has provided the basis for long term links between the UK and Indonesia. The participants worked collaboratively to develop a research roadmap that identifies the current state of coastal resilience in communities, the remaining challenges, and a series of research priorities aimed at improving coastal resilience. The final roadmap, to be published later this year, will set a 15 year agenda for research that will contribute towards achievement of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda that was endorsed by the UN General Assembly in June 2015. The roadmap will also provide a strong basis for future cooperation between the UK and Indonesia, and the participating researchers and institutions.
The workshop also involved a visit to the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, which acts as a Tsunami Service Provider (TSP) for the Indian Ocean, the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS).
