Major power resilience work requires IT shutdown

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 01:55:00 GMT

During the weekend of Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December 2015, colleagues in Estates and Facilities and Computing Services will be working together to connect a backup generator to the main Data Centre in the Central Services Building.

The main purpose of this work is to avoid a repeat of the unplanned power cut we suffered on 30 October 2014 which affected many systems throughout the autumn term.

Although the work will involve a considerable power outage to the main Data Centre, we may be able to run some IT systems from an alternative campus location for the duration of the weekend, and some systems may be unavailable for only a few minutes.

However, for the sake of clarity we are asking everyone to consider the weekend of 19 and 20 December 2015 ‘at risk’ and to be aware that the whole of the IT infrastructure may be unavailable.

More information regarding which systems will be operating during the weekend, and which will not, will be available once we have concluded the detailed planning process.
