New partnership is to be launched at a Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival Concert
THE pioneering music recorded by the University of Huddersfield’s own record label will now reach a massively increased global audience thanks to a distribution agreement with a leading label.
This new partnership is to be launched at a Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival Concert on 26 November, featuring two current and former Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) researchers – guitarist Diego Castro (pictured right) and clarinetist Heather Roche (pictured left).
Huddersfield Contemporary Records (HCR) was launched in 2009 as partnership between CeReNeM, Huddersfield University Press and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The label has released a sequence of high-quality CDs and DVDs, including works by composers based at the University and has already attracted much attention in the national press, including coverage in The Wire and Gramophone magazine.
Now HCR’s back catalogue and new releases will distributed by NMC Recordings, which is the largest label dedicated to contemporary music from the British Isles. Its website receives millions of hits annually and in addition to marketing HCR’s discs, the music will also be more widely distributed digitally, via iTunes for example.
“We expect that our sales will rise exponentially as a result of the partnership with NMC, a brand for experimental music that is known around the world,” said Dr Matthew Sergeant, general manager of HCR and centre manager for CeReNeM.
HCR will retain complete artistic and editorial control over its recordings and would continue to issue its distinctive products discs distinguished by their high quality artwork – created by Mike Spikin, of the University’s Computing and Library Services.
