Broadcast Journalism student Hazera Bibi recently attended a networking event at the Royal Television Society (RTS) in London. The RTS offers two bursary schemes each year to undergraduates to pursue a career in television and Hazera is the lucky recipient of one of these. The RTS choose 20 applicants in total per year from Journalism, Film and Media courses across higher education and Hazera was the first student to attend from the University of Huddersfield.
She was encouraged to apply when the opportunity was offered to all our Journalism students - and it has certainly paid off for her.
"We were invited for dinner, to network with people within film and were given a masterclass with talks from experts in sound, editing and camera." Hazera also met Dr Who editor, Tim Palmer, which she was very excited about. "I got my photograph taken with him and he gave us a talk - it was good to get some advice from someone with so much experience."
Hazera also met Ben Stark who is the editor behind documentaries such as 9/11 - The Falling Man and some of the Cutting Edge Series documentaries.
You can find out more about the Royal Television Society here.
Hazera is a hard working student. She's the Head of Music for HUDTV, the University television channel, which she joined in July 2014. Hazera's job is to find artists and bands to film and find out about any music events that are happening around the Huddersfield area. She then puts a team together to film them. Hazera is also involved in the fortnightly programme showcasing the work of local music students.
She's currently involved with HUDTV's project to strike up deals with various venues across Huddersfield to film open mic nights every week, helping potential students who have a passion for music get noticed.
Hazera said "I am now much more confident when using the camera, and in approaching the right contacts, in the right way to secure events to film".
Check out ‘The Coffeehouse’ events every Wednesday in the Students' Union, which are broadcast on the HUDTV channel and are open to all students from all universities. The team also filmed ‘HUD Rights’ which was an open mic night broadcast for charity. The fundraising was for Dr Hadwen Trust which is the UK’s leading non-animal medical research charity.
We wish Hazera every success with her burgeoning career!
