April showers well below the average

blossom April was warmer and drier than average with 19 days of the month escaping rainfall.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.  This report is also the 300th report produced by the weather station.

The monthly mean temperature was 9.8˚C compared to the average for April of 9.3˚C.  The warmest day of the month was Thursday 23rd with an average temperature of 14.8˚C; the maximum temperature of 21.8˚C was also recorded on this day.  The coldest day of the month was Wednesday 1st with an average figure of 6.1˚C.  The lowest minimum temperature of 0˚C was recorded on Sunday 26th

mushroom A total of 39.8mm of rainfall was recorded during the month (average 54.2mm).  The wettest day of the month was Thursday 28th with 6.4mm of rain (16% of the month’s total rainfall).  Nineteen days of the month escaped without any rainfall, the driest spells falling between Saturday 4th to Thursday 9th and Monday 13th to Saturday 18th inclusive.

The mean wind speed for the month was 10.9km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 51.48km/hr recorded on Wednesday 29th.  The highest gust of wind for the whole month was 123.48km/hr recorded on Tuesday 28th.

The prevailing wind direction was south west.
