Gemma Lamb was named as the winner of the Institute of Food Science and Technology's (IFST) north of England young scientist competition.

Gemma, who is just about to sit the final exams of her Food, Nutrition and Health degree, won the award after giving a presentation on her dissertation work at an event in Manchester, in front of an audience and a panel of judges.

For her final year project, Gemma has been looking at mealworms as a sustainable alternative source of protein, and how acceptable bread enriched with mealworms would be to consumers.

Gemma was one of five finalists in the undergraduate category from universities across the region, alongside fellow Huddersfield student Katie Baker who has been investigating pasta enriched with seaweed for her project.
