A team of younger chemists from the University of Huddersfield were finalists at the national RSC-SCI Retrosynthesis Competition held in London on 27 February.

This was the first time the University has been represented in the event, and the team's achievement of reaching and then performing superbly in the final represents an outstanding high-profile success for them personally and the Department of Chemical Sciences.

To be selected as one of the ten finalists, our team saw off competition from the likes of UCL, Cambridge and Imperial College, and more than held their own in the final, taking part in high-level scientific discussions, demonstrating the strength of chemical research in Huddersfield which was highlighted in our excellent REF result.

Highlight of the day? Third year undergraduate student Adam Clayton telling Oxford University’s Professor Martin Smith "Of course it'll give the cis-isomer!"

Returning to Huddersfield, the team were congratulated on their success by the vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan CBE.
