On 26th February, The Financial Ethics and Governance Research Group (FEGReG) had the privilege of hosting a seminar given by Professor Khaled Hussainey, Professor of Accounting at Plymouth Graduate School of Management and Plymouth Business School (Faculty of Business). Showing no sign of fatigue after his long journey from the south west, the night before the FEGReG seminar he generously gave four hours of his time to speak to a group of PhD students about the PhD research journey. He also had informal meetings with Professor Collins Ntim, Director of FEGReG and with other FEGReG members before and after the seminar.

Professor Hussainey specialises in, and has made a significant contribution to, market based accounting research. His principal research area is in corporate voluntary disclosure where he uses innovative methodologies and a high degree of triangulation to measure the level and quality of narrative reporting. This has been recognised by the award of significant sums of research funding, most recently $120,000 from the Qatar National Research Foundation. He also has a prolific publication record.

The subject of his talk was the ‘Economic Consequences of Key Performance Indicators’ Disclosure Quality’. This study is the first to measure the quality of KPI reporting in companies’ annual reports and to examine the economic consequences of that. In these times where the public mood is for greater corporate transparency, the findings of his research raise some trenchant questions not only about the economic but also the ethical consequences of KPI disclosure and provide a sound evidence base for the development of disclosure policy. Fielding questions both during and after his presentation, he thanked FEGReG members for their insightful comments on the development of his work.

Shortly after the seminar Professor Hussainey learned that his paper was to be published in the prestigious International Review of Financial Analysis.
