On 27 March Lowerhouses Primary School in Huddersfield held a Health Day, to which Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) students were invited to help promote the importance of sleep hygiene issues to the children.  Second year students, Sophie Dawson and Natalie Morris seized the opportunity to work with the children, enabling them to combine their occupational therapy skills with their experience as Brownie Leaders.  Sophie and Natalie developed a 20 minute presentation and follow up leaflet, which they presented to different groups of children aged 7-10. The interactive session featured quizzes and games, which the children enjoyed and engaged with really well by asking and answering questions. Positive feedback was received from the staff at the school and after observing the sessions a member of the teaching team assumed that Natalie and Sophie were qualified health professionals.

Natalie and Sophie commented: “We enjoyed interacting with the children and staff at the school and being a part of their health day. Having little knowledge around sleep hygiene ourselves we learnt a lot about the topic. Working with the children also gave us insight into how we were respected as professionals and looked up to by the children as they also showed interest in us attending university. We undertook this role to develop our skills in presenting and gaining experience in delivering information around good health. This was a fantastic opportunity to promote the broader role of occupational therapy within health promotion”.
