With recent National Student Survey results placing Music at Huddersfield at the top of the tree in Yorkshire, and in the top 10 universities in the UK for both student satisfaction and for research, we’ve taken the opportunity to refresh our undergraduate courses to reflect the unique opportunities we offer at Huddersfield for our students, combining a vast array of performance opportunities with rigorous academic study.

So from September this year we’re offering three courses in Music instead of one – whilst continuing to offer our current set of Music Technology courses. The three courses are: Music BMus(Hons); Music Performance BMus(Hons); and Popular Music BMus(Hons), meaning that performance will be a major option on all three courses. And all three also offer the opportunity for a placement year in your third year.

Music Performance BMus
Here, you’ll specialise in performance even more than on our existing courses. You'll be able to take a mix of solo performance and performance skills modules plus other modules involving performance, so that two thirds and possibly more of your modules may be performance based. This means you can take solo performance for 40 credits, for which you'll receive 20 hours of one-to-one tuition. You will, of course, need to meet a certain standard on admission, so you'll undergo an audition prior to entry. Once accepted on the course, you'll then be allowed to remain on it for the whole three years without having to face any further hurdles.

Music BMus

On this course, again subject to audition, you'll be able to take solo performance each year for 20 credits – which gives you 10 hours of one-on-one tuition per year. Again, there are no hurdles to overcome, so you can continue to take solo performance no matter what mark you achieve from one year to the next. Exceptionally, you might be advised to change courses between your 1st and 2nd year, if it's thought you're more suited to one of the other courses.

New Music Courses

Popular Music BMus

This is a course aimed at those interested in popular music as a performer, a songwriter – or in learning more about the cultures in which popular music is produced. There’s group coaching as well as individual tuition on your instrument and specialist songwriting classes and performance in bands lie at the heart of the course. You’ll be encouraged to work collaboratively to maximise your potential for writing, composition and performing original music.

We’re all really looking forward to the prospect of delivering these courses and are looking forward to beginnning work with our new cohort of students in September. At Huddersfield, we’ve always concentrated on combining the opportunity to perform with a good, sound academic base, and are convinced that these new courses continue to reflect what’s unique about a Huddersfield Music degree.
