Surface metrologist Mothana Hassan’s PhD research is applauded by a leading journal and features at the LAMDAMAP 2015 conference

AN Iraqi scientist at the University of Huddersfield has been honoured by his government and – as he nears the conclusion of his doctoral research – this week delivered a keynote presentation at a major international conference.  He has also received praise for the quality of his journal articles.

Mothana Hassan is based in the University’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology.  Since 2010 he has been working towards a PhD, supervised by the leading metrologist Professor Xiangqian Jiang.  He is carrying out work in the field of interferometry – an important technique for complex surface measurement.

Ambassador Noori and Mothana Hassan Mothana Hassan presents his research to the Iraq Consul General, Ambassador Zaid Noori, and other senior officials from the Iraqi Consulate, when they paid a fact-finding visit to the University.

Mothana is the lead author of an article entitled Surface profile measurement using spatially dispersed short coherence interferometry that was published in Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties.  Now he has been told by the journal’s editorial board that that the article has been selected as one of the best of 2014 and will therefore be included in a published collection of highlights.

There has also been a fresh honour from Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which recently bestowed an Appreciation Certificate on Mothana, in recognition of his contributions to international scientific journals and to conferences.

The certificate was presented by the Iraqi Cultural Attaché at a special ceremony in London (pictured at the top of the page).  For his doctoral research at the University of Huddersfield, Mothana has received a scholarship from Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education.

LAMDAMAP 2015

The University of Huddersfield – a major centre for metrology research – is to host the 11th International Conference and Exhibition on Laser Metrology, Coordinate Measuring Machine and Machine Tool Performance (LAMDAMAP), organised by the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen).

The conference was chaired by Professor Liam Blunt, who is Research Director for the EPSRC Centre, and day one of the event saw Mothana Hassan present a keynote paper during a session entitled New Developments in Measurement Techniques

Mothana gained his first degree at Baghdad’s University of Technology, specialising in laser and opto-electronic engineering.  He then taught at the university, but his research in holograms led him towards the field of interferometry and for his PhD he relocated to the University of Huddersfield, where he has been delighted by the quality of the facilities and supervision from Professor Jiang and Dr Haydn Martin.  He has plans to conclude his doctoral studies during 2015 and to continue as an academic researcher.
