The Sendai International Centre in Japan, where the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDRR) was taking place, was the setting for the Local Governments Roundtable.

Taking into account the experience gained through the implementation of the HFA, there is a need for accelerated and focused action across sectors by local and national governments in Understanding disaster risk; Strengthening governance and institutions to manage disaster risk; Investing in economic, social, cultural and environmental resilience;) and Enhancing preparedness for effective response, and building back better in recovery and reconstruction.

Keeping in view the expected outcomes of WCDRR and the focus on accelerated implementation at local level, UNISDR and partners of the Making Cities Resilient Campaign, including Huddersfield’s Global Disaster Resilience Centre Professors Dilanthi Amaratunga and Richard Haigh, organised this local authorities roundtable.

The meeting sought to discuss the implementation of post-2015 framework disaster risk reduction at local level, and to agree and endorse the declaration of mayors. The pivotal role of local and regional government in urban risk reduction and resilience building was a particular focus of the meeting.

The meeting included the launch of a special themed issue of the International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment (IJDRBE), held in collaboration with GDRC and the ANDROID Disaster Resilience network. The issue focuses on The State of Disaster Risk Reduction at the Local Level: Patterns of DRR Actions, and was Guest Edited by Jerry Velasquez, Director of Outreach at the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR).
