Dear Colleagues

After more than a decade of exemplary support to the University our Chancellor, Sir Patrick Stewart, will stand down from his role after the July graduation ceremonies.

We have been proud and privileged to have had him as our Chancellor for so many years and, in due course, we will be organising an event to mark his enormous contribution to the University.  We will not be losing touch with Sir Patrick as he has agreed to become Emeritus Chancellor, and to keep flying the flag for Huddersfield.

I would like to ask for your help in the search for a successor to Sir Patrick.  If you have suggestions for someone who could be our new Chancellor please email them to chancellor@hud.ac.uk by 30 April 2015.

We will then compile a shortlist of suggestions for consideration by the University Council’s Governance and Membership Committee with the Students’ Union President.

Our Chancellor acts as titular head of the University and presides at award ceremonies and other official occasions.  The Chancellor also acts as an ambassador for the University.

Who are we looking for?

Here’s a list of some of the qualities and characteristics we might look for in a Chancellor:

  • Existing linkages with the University/the Local Area;
  • Ability to promote the University;
  • Known both regionally and nationally; and
  • Someone who inspires others.

Chancellors often come from the following groups:

  • Prominent Business People;
  • A member of the aristocracy, or the royal family;
  • Academia;
  • The Arts;
  • A person distinguished in their specific field; and
  • A former politician.

Although we would not approach an existing University Chancellor you may find this list of University Chancellors useful in thinking through the type of person we should consider for our University: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_university_chancellors_and_vice-chancellors

We look forward to receiving your suggestions.

Professor Bob Cryan

Vice-Chancellor
