The First Athena SWAN Conference for The University of Huddersfield will be held on Friday 17 April in the George Buckley Lecture Theatre. The Athena Swan conference focuses on ‘Unconscious Bias’ and how recognising and managing it is of benefit to others, through better/fairer decision making, for example in recruitment, promotion and workload allocation.
The conference will be opened by Professor Liz Towns-Andrews who will discuss the role of Athena Swan in our institution.
Our first key note speaker is Professor Kate Bullen, currently Director of Ethics and Equality, and Professor of Psychology, at Aberystwyth University. Kate’s presentation will outline the speaker’s personal and professional experience as a woman in higher education and will assess if, and how, unconscious bias has been a factor in that process.
We are also delighted to welcome our second keynote speakers, Yvonne Prendergast and Rachel Tobell, Athena SWAN consultants who have supported a number of Higher Education institutions with their Athena SWAN applications and will be of great benefit to those departments who will be applying for awards in the future.
The conference includes an update on our application for the Institutional Athena Swan Bronze Award, and an opportunity to ask questions of a panel about Athena Swan or issues of fairness and gender equality that affect both men and women.
