With around 120 different nationalities on campus the University has numerous international student societies that put on many different cultural events and activities throughout the year.

Last week saw students from the Middle-East come together to celebrate Arabic culture, by raising awareness and welcoming people from different backgrounds to embrace different cultures.

There were a range of activities including games, dressing up, singing, dancing and lots of traditional food on offer for students and staff to sample.Arabic Day

Students from Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine and the U.A.E. took part in the event.

“There is always great anticipation and excitement in the run up to Arabic Day,” said International Marketing Officer Alan Tobi.  “The passion, pride, innovation and effort our students put into the events highlights the high calibre and commitment of students at the University.”  ‌

“The University prides itself on providing a world-class student experience and these events and activities on campus throughout the year reinforce this message.”

“It provides a platform for the integration of our British and international students to learn from one another and develop friendships,” he added.

Arabic Day Law and Business student, Sabina Alexandra Negut from enjoyed the event: “It was really interesting to see the many styles of dancing among the Arabic countries, it’s something I have never seen before and certainly something we don’t get in Europe. Even trying the different kinds of foods from each country was very special as even though they are quite similar looking, they all add a unique twist to their cuisines.”

She added: “It was also great to have the opportunity to try on traditional clothing and learn some basic language skills.”

British student Simon Heawood added: “The event was fantastic, a great way to gain a better understanding of such a beautiful set of countries. The performances and food were extraordinary and gave a really nice insight into their cultures.”

Over 2,000 people attended the 3-hour event and plans are already starting for the next event in 2016.
