Visiting professor arrives from Australia

John Smyth, Emeritus Professor at Federation University in Australia, will be making his making his first visit to the School of Education and Professional Development in his new role as Visiting Professor of Education and Social Justice, for two weeks from 8th June. He will be involved in a range of activities during his stay with us including the international symposium Youth, Insecurity and Education and will be giving a public lecture Working class student resistance to education: what is it, and where are we going? in School on 11th June
John has previously held professorships and visiting professorships in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK; he is the author or co-author of 30 academic books, over 130 papers in peer-reviewed academic journals, and 80 book chapters. He has been principal investigator or co-investigator for over 70 major research projects funded by bodies based in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, and is recognised as one of the world’s leading critical scholars. John has served on editorial boards for over 20 leading academic journals; refereed funding applications for a range of bodies in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA; and acted as an expert consultant to universities and government bodies in a number of countries.
John’s research interests include the sociology of youth; school and community capacity building; critical pedagogy; educational leadership; and the lives of students and teachers, especially those working in challenging circumstances. Methodologically, John’s work draws on critical policy analysis, ethnography and other forms of qualitative analyses, and focuses particularly on examining and challenging educational and social disadvantage. He has supervised over 20 doctoral students to completion and examined more than 50 research degrees in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.
