Innovative Design Lab Launch

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 13:56:00 BST

The Innovative Design Lab Launch Event was held on the 12th of May 2015 at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre. Please follow this link for an agenda of the event. The event included discussions around the role of research in design and its importance to support improvements in industry practices.

Industrial and practitioner presenters discussed the impact of previous and ongoing research on the product design and Built Environment fields. Client perceptions on the innovations that academic research can provide to change business in a positive way were discussed.

Professor Duane Passman and Derek Drysdale presented excellent examples of how academic research have helped the management and design task to become more efficient when implemented according to lean thinking.

Professor Carlos Formoso, Professor Glenn Ballard, Professor Miroslav Skibniewski and Professor Ghassan Aouad discussed the fundamentals of current research projects, highlighting some of the current challenges in research and innovation.

The contribution of the expertise of Trond Bolviken from Veidekke and Martin Simpson from Arup, highlight the need for research developments to connect theory and practice aligned to information technologies (i.e. BIM – Building Information Modelling).

The event provided an opportunity to establish new relations and extend existing partnerships. The research centre focuses on enabling collaborations between industry and academia, the launch event has been a successful means to initiate such collaborations.
