Professor John Bryan has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Music by the University.  This is the first DMus awarded by the University and Professor Bryan will be presented with his award on Wednesday 15 July at the University’s Awards Ceremony.

When asked about this achievement he commented, “I'm extremely pleased to have achieved this higher degree with the University's support, especially for the recognition it brings for music research that is performance-based.”

In order to achieve this award Professor Bryan submitted a broad portfolio of research work, including two book chapters, three articles from peer-reviewed journals, a music edition and 11 CDs of newly researched performances, together with a short essay describing the significance of his research.  His extensive research includes three interrelated themes on the repertory and performance of 16th and early 17th century music using the consort of viols.

The significance of this research was recognised by its selection as one of three Impact Case Studies for the University of Huddersfield’s UoA35 (Music) 2014 REF entry, and contributed to the 90% 4* rating for the unit’s impact.

This research has also been selected for presentation at the 2015 Cheltenham Music Festival in association with AHRC, and is showcased in regular appearances of the Rose Consort with specially devised programmes at York Early Music Festival. These concerts, together with John’s extensive discography and related written research outputs, have brought previously unknown repertory to wider audiences, and opened their ears to new ways of listening to it.

John Bryan was appointed to the University of Huddersfield as Principal Lecturer and Performance Leader in 1994, was Head of Music and Drama from 2005 to 2014 and was awarded a Professorship for his practice-led research in 2007. He studied at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of York, and has developed a career that encompasses performance, research and teaching in equal measure.

Before his appointment at Huddersfield, John was Senior Lecturer in Music at the College of Ripon & York St John, and a Visiting Fellow in Music at the University of York. He was also a visiting tutor in early music at the Universities of York, Leeds and Hull, founded the North East Early Music Forum and still coaches performance regularly at summer schools such as those at Dartington and Little Benslow Music Trust in Hitchin. He has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2008.

Professor Bryan regularly performs playing viols, harpsichord, recorders and other renaissance instruments, which he taught himself to play as a student. He performs internationally and regularly records with ensembles such as the Rose Consort of Viols and Musica Antiqua of London, whilst combining his roles as director, player, researcher and teacher. As well as performing throughout Europe and North America, John has recorded 40 CDs, is an artistic adviser to York Early Music Festival, and a contributor to BBC Radio 3’s early music programmes.
