Man at helm of region’s regeneration credits his success to Hudds

Huddersfield graduate Nigel Foster is now a driving force behind the region’s regeneration and its sustainable development 

A FORMER student of the University of Huddersfield – who says that his studies were a life-changing experience – has returned in order to receive an Honorary Doctorate.  The award to Nigel Foster is in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to regeneration, development and sustainability of city regions both on a local and national level”. 

“It is wonderful to return to the University and the see enormous progress that has been made,” said Mr Foster, after his honorary award had been bestowed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Bob Cryan, during one of the ceremonies taking place during graduation week.  Also in attendance was the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe. 

The Dean of the School of Art, Design and Architecture, Professor Mike Kagioglou, delivered an oration that outlined Mr Foster’s career. 

After his degree studies he went to become an experienced executive and non-executive director holding roles at major international companies, working in both the UK and overseas, for private and public sector clients.  Mr Foster is currently president and a director of the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and is also a director of the inward investment agency for Leeds. 

Nigel Foster During his career, Mr Foster has provided advice on transport, regeneration and sustainability, and he has been involved in numerous major projects in the UK and overseas aimed at revitalising cities, creating sustainable development and supporting economic growth.  He now runs his own businesses providing strategic consultancy across all aspects of cities and the built environment. 

Professor Kagioglou said that Nigel Foster “believes strongly that making cities more sustainable and resilient will improve the quality of life”. 

In his response, Mr Foster said that it was very humbling and a great privilege to receive the award of Honorary Doctorate of the University.  He was the first person in his family to attend university and Huddersfield proved to be an excellent choice. 

“I can definitely say it changed my life,” added Mr Foster.  “My time at Huddersfield gave me a wonderful springboard for my career and it sowed the seeds for the importance of sustainability.”
