The Page Lecture honours Huddersfield’s Professor Mike Page and the inaugural speaker is MIT Professor of Chemistry Stephen Buchwald

Professor Mike Page A LEADING U.S. scientist came to the UK to deliver the inaugural lecture of a new series that honours the University of Huddersfield’s long-serving Professor Mike Page (pictured right).

The visitor was Stephen Buchwald, a Professor of Chemistry at the world-famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  He is globally renowned for his breakthroughs in medicinal chemistry, having discovered catalysts that are routinely used by researchers at major pharmaceutical companies.  This has aided the creation of new drugs that target a wide range of diseases.

Professor Buchwald was invited to the deliver the first biennial Page Lecture at the University.  This new series of events recognises the impact made by Professor Mike Page, who has himself earned a global reputation for his research, covering the fields of organic chemistry, biochemistry and medicinal chemistry.

He is the author or co-author of more than 200 publications, including articles in leading international journals, and he has the distinction of having been cited more than 5,000 times by other scientific authors.

Dr Nick Powles, Dr Matt Stirling, Professor John Atherton and Professor Mike Page Professor Page was educated at universities in Brighton, Leicester and Glasgow, arriving at Huddersfield as a lecturer in 1973.  He became Professor of Chemistry in 1985 and his other posts included Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences and Dean of the School of Applied Sciences.

Between 2004 and 2009, he was also the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor.  When he stepped down from this post he received an emeritus professorship.

‌Professor Page also co-founded the research team named IPOS (Innovative Physical Organic Solutions), based in an advanced suite of labs that are named after him.  The unit carries out cutting-edge research and analysis on behalf of industry.

In addition to the address by Professor Buchwald, the inaugural Page Lecture also featured talks by Professor Igor Larrosa, who holds the Chair of Organic Chemistry at University of Manchester, and Professor Matthew Gaunt, of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge.
