Professor Li Peigen of Huazhong University of Science and Technology predicts a long and fruitful relationship with Huddersfield

Leading Chinese scientist honoured at award ceremonies ONE of China’s top scientists has predicted “a long and fruitful relationship” between his institution and the University of Huddersfield.

Professor Li Peigen, of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) (pictured left), was speaking after he received an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Huddersfield, during one of the ceremonies taking place as part of its graduation week.

He was introduced by Professor Xiangqian Jiang – also a leading Chinese scientist, and Director of the University of Huddersfield’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology.  Her PhD was obtained at HUST with an award-winning thesis before she relocated to the UK.

Professor Jiang’s oration provided an outline of Peigen Li’s education, career and achievements, in fields such as the integration of manufacturing technology with information technology.  He had demonstrated “persistence and marked intelligence” in developing computer-aided production planning systems for the textile manufacturing sector that had now been adopted by thousands of companies worldwide.

Li Peigen had also established a technical website aimed at manufacturers that received thousands of hits every day.  “His work is recognsied across the world and in addition to his pure academic research, Li Peigen has a big commitment to technology transfer,” said Professor Jiang.

University of Huddersfield's Pro Vice-Chancellor, International, Professor David Taylor conferred the Honorary Doctorate (pictured right) – for “outstanding services to the fields of science, technology and engineering” – upon Professor Li, who responded by congratulating all the engineering and science students who had received their awards at the ceremony.

“I know that University of Huddersfield students are dedicated to solving the problems and answering the questions posed by science and society at large,” he said.

“I am very happy to be linked with such a special and friendly place as the University of Huddersfield.  I know there will be a long and fruitful relationship between Huddersfield and Huazhong.”
