Research in Chemistry at Huddersfield was submitted to the Higher Education Funding Council’s 2014 Research Excellence Framework(REF 2014) exercise, along with that of all major UK universities.  The work of 18 members of the Department of Chemical Sciences was assessed under REF 2014.   We are pleased to report that, of the research work submitted in Chemistry, 64% was judged by the expert panel to be “Internationally Excellent” or “World-Leading”.  As part of this, several research papers produced by the Department over the assessment period (2008-2013) were judged “World-Leading”.

For the first time the UK Government assessed the socio-economic impact of the research in universities in this exercise.  We submitted case studies demonstrating the impact of our work, one covering work on the chemistry of antibiotic resistance and one on the chemistry of porous solids for use as adsorbents and catalysts.  Our impact was judged 70% “Internationally Leading” and “30%” Internationally Recognised.

Overall, the REF2014 outcome for the Department was a great success and will provide a major impetus to the continued growth and strength of Chemistry research in Huddersfield.
