Higher than average temperatures

robin For the fourth month in a row Huddersfield experienced higher than average monthly temperatures; on the minus side it was the sixth wettest December since our records began.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.

‌The monthly mean temperature was 5.8˚C compared to the average for December of 5.07˚C.  The warmest days of the month were Sunday 21st and Monday 22nd both with an average temperature of 11.8˚C.  The maximum temperature during the month was 13.3˚C recorded on Monday 22nd.  The coldest day of the month was Saturday 27th with an average temperature of 1 ˚C; the lowest minimum temperature of -2˚C was also recorded on this day.  The temperature fell below zero on 5 days of the month.

great tit It was the wettest December since 2006 with a rainfall total of 134.6mm (average 97.8mm).  The wettest day of the month was Wednesday 10th with 26.2mm of rainfall (19.5% of the month’s total rainfall).  Just 3 days of the month escaped rainfall.  Snow fell on Friday 26th causing widespread travel problems; this was followed by two days of severe frosts causing icy conditions on the roads.

The mean wind speed for the month was 15.6km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 44.28km/hr recorded on Monday 22nd.  The highest gust of wind for the month was 111.6km/hr recorded on Thursday 18th.

The prevailing wind direction for the month was southwest.
