HABITAT Universities

The University of Huddersfield via its Global Disaster Resilience Centre (GDRC) has been accepted as a partner of UNHABITAT’s HABITAT UNIVERSITIES initiative. This initiative was introduced as a means of promoting cooperation between UN-HABITAT and institutions of higher education, as well as facilitating exchange and cooperation among universities globally. It promotes the idea of universities becoming closer partners of cities and actively engaged in problem solving, thus closing the gap between academia and practice, and encouraging collaborative learning.  The aim of the Habitat Partner University Initiative is to harness the strengths of universities and promote cooperation in the fields of education, research, professional development and policy advice towards progressive university-city collaborations on sustainable urban development.UN-HABITAT

The Habitat Partner University Initiative aspires to create the next generation of urban leaders, managers, researchers and practitioners. Universities are the key to the success of the initiative and UN-HABITAT will act as a catalyst, facilitating partnerships with them and other agenda partners.

The work of the Initiative is defined into pillars: Education, research, professional development, policy advice and knowledge management. Through its research, GDRC will support UN-HABITAT’s work in these pillars, with a particular emphasis on reconstruction and resilience.

The focal point at Huddersfield for this initiative is Professor Richard Haigh from GDRC. Please contact Richard for further details on the HABITAT UNIVERSITIES initiative.
