Staff from the School of Computing and Engineering have been involved with providing the engineering expertise to bring to fruition the concept of ‘Framing the Landscape’ envisaged by local artist, Ashley Jackson. The aim is to provide a window on the landscape through which children would be inspired to draw what they see.

The Engineering Technicians who carry out designing and manufacturing projects for the School took this basic concept and turned it into a piece of physical artwork. The frames simple look hides its true complexity and the hours of work involved in the design and manufacture.

Signatures, logos and special text all had to be constructed in 2D CAD using lines and arcs then transferred to the 3D CAD model and finally into the manufacturing CAM package before going on to the machines for cutting.  Compound angles had to be worked out before some of the machining could be carried out. Stability of the completed structure, its safety and how it had to be fastened down also had to be worked out. The technical staff project managed the manufacturing, delivery and fixing of the assemblies on site.
