The University of Huddersfield welcomed its latest resident this week, The Right Reverend Dr Jonathan Gibbs.

The Right Reverend Dr Jonathan Gibbs, who was appointed as the first Bishop of Huddersfield last August, will be based here at the University.  This is the first time that a bishop has had an office at a university and the move sees Bishop Jonathan based at the heart of his Episcopal Area.

Bishop Jonathan, 53, whose area covers the whole of Kirklees and Calderdale, said: “My role is to be at the heart of the community and the University of Huddersfield is a key institution. It is a fantastic, vibrant place where we invest in the future of our young people.  This symbolises our commitment to helping the next generation and putting the church right at the heart of the wider community.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan said: “I am delighted that Bishop Jonathan will be based at the University. We are pleased to be playing a small part in this historic moment. We now have a Bishop of Huddersfield in response to changing times and changing needs and I look forward to a highly fruitful relationship both with the Episcopal Area and our new bishop.”

Bishop Jonathan, father-of-three, was previously Rector of Heswall on the Wirral.
