International Women's Day

International Women’s Day takes place on Sunday 8 March this year.  Every year thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements.  Each year a new theme is selected and this year’s theme is ‘make it happen’.  Here at the University of Huddersfield various events will be taking place to celebrate this day.

The University of Huddersfield in partnership with the WomenCentre Kirklees and Calderdale is holding a special event on Monday 9 March, which will feature the sessions below:

1.00pm: Surya Munro will deliver a session entitled 'Why is feminism relevant today'. This will include a short film followed by a discussion of everyday sexism in contemporary society based on the award-winning Everyday Sexism Project by Laura Bates.

2.00pm: Jo Woodiwiss/Kate Wood/Kelly Lockwood (WomenCentre) will deliver a session entitled 'I died as a child'. This will feature a WomenCentre digital story of a woman's childhood sexual abuse followed by a discussion with the story makers.

3.00pm: Janet Hargreaves will deliver a session entitled Celebrating Women's Lives. This will involve a food based activity, where each woman will have the chance to reflect on the good things in their lives and to construct an ice cream sundae to celebrate.

4.00pm: Kate Smith will deliver a session entitled The Cruel Cut. This will feature a Channel 4 documentary with Leyla Hussein which explores the complex issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) - when a girl or woman's genitals are either partially or totally removed for non-medical reasons.

Each session will take place in R1/12 in the Ramsden Building.

This is a free event and places can be booked here International Women’s Day Participants are free to choose which aspects of the event they would like to attend and there are limited numbers for some sessions.
