NPL and the University appoint Director of NPL Northern England

Professor John Bancroft will take up his new position from 4 January 2016

The University and National Physical Laboratory (NPL) are delighted to announce that Professor John Bancroft will be the new Director of NPL Northern England as a joint appointment with both organisations. 

NPL, supported by its partners, is creating a series of regional hubs across the UK.  These hubs are part of a long-term commitment to deliver regional access to the UK’s measurement capabilities working alongside world-class science and innovation partners.

The NPL Northern England hub will address the needs of companies in Northern England through a blend of accessible, industry-relevant collaborative research, products and services.

NPL Northern England will initially comprise of two existing centres coming together; NPL’s testing and services laboratory – NPL Huddersfield – and the University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT).

John Bancroft joins the team from Auckland University of Technology, where he is Industry Engagement Manager.  He has a long career in building research capability and winning research funding and is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Sales and Marketing Management and Visiting Professor in Science and Innovation at the University of Huddersfield.

Prior to his time in New Zealand, Professor Bancroft worked with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and was appointed the first Director of the Hartree Centre and Head of Campus Centres at STFC, Daresbury. 

Throughout his career, John has worked in technology research and development organisations in a variety of roles.  These include sales, marketing and business development, partnering with government and industry to generate investment for innovation, the delivery of outreach and impact generation programmes as well as IP exploitation.
