Happy Campus Team News

The Happy Campus team has had a busy few weeks raising money for cancer charities. It started with a staff quiz in November with a great turnout of 22 teams. As with all Happy Campus quizzes, the excitement was very much focused on the ‘tat’ raffle, with Christmas-themed items as well as a three-course-meal through the medium of tins.
Previous winners, The Magnificats, were pipped at the post by newcomers Simple Minds with Wooden Spoon winners, Sophie’s Choice, bringing up the rear. The quiz was a great success and raised a total of £420.
This was quickly followed by the Happy Campus Christmas-Kick-Off-Bake-Off last week. The team were overwhelmed by the number and quality of bakes entered into the three categories of large, small and Christmas themed cakes. Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry were not required as the team had acquired the talents of our own Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan, BBC Inside Out reporter Nicola Rees and former University of Huddersfield student Allison Whitmarsh, owner of local baking company Propermaid.
The winners were as follows:
Large Cakes: Jan Appleyard’s Hazelnut Latte Cake
Small Cakes: Barry Timmins’ Mushy Pea and Mint cakes (yes, really!)
Christmas Theme: Rachel Brown’s Christmas Cake
Overall cake of cakes was awarded to Jan for her cake.
Following the competition, the cakes were sold in Student Central for £1.00 a slice. The efforts of our bakers and buyers raised a further £300, making a total of £720 which will be split between Cancer Research UK and Stand Up to Cancer charities.
The Stand Up to Cancer pot has been increased further by the sale of a charity calendar which features several members of staff holding bunches of strategically placed flowers. This has been organised by Dionne Coburn, from Research and Enterprise. Sales have topped £1,000. There are still a couple of calendars available, if you’d like to buy one for £5.00, or donate to the charities, please contact Dionne or Sarah Broxton.
Happy Campus would like to thank the following for all their help in supporting the events:
- Our Bake-Off judges for taking time out of their busy schedules;
- All our quizzers, bakers and cake eaters who gave generously to our charities;
- Heritage Quay team for hosting;
- Julie Rodgers and Rachel Mountford and their teams for catering support and generous prizes;
- Helen Walker for amazing quiz writing skills and certificate design prowess.
There’s a rumour of another quiz to blast away the winter blues early in the New Year, watch this space…
