Our Alumni Office is marking the 175th Anniversary of the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society, a predecessor institution, (Frederic Schwann, the Founder is pictured below), by seeking the ‘oldest alumni’ and creating an Alumni Roll of Honour, and they need your help.
Oldest Alumni
Since there are many ways to define ‘oldest alumni’, the Alumni Office would love to hear from anyone who knows who may be the:
- first person to graduate from the University of Huddersfield in 1992
- oldest person at time of their graduation
- oldest surviving graduate of a predecessor institution*
- oldest surviving graduate of the University of Huddersfield
The Alumni Office plans to talk to their oldest alumni about their time as students and invite them to a special celebration to mark the 175th Anniversary, to be held in March 2016, (date to be confirmed).
Alumni Roll of Honour - call for nominations
Do you know of any alumni who studied at the University of Huddersfield (or any of its predecessor institutions*) who deserve special recognition for their achievements and contribution to society?
To mark the 175th Anniversary the University of Huddersfield is creating a Roll of Honour of alumni who have made an outstanding, noteworthy contribution to the fields of science and technology, learning, the arts, business and the professions, and/or in public life via community involvement, meritorious heroism or significant philanthropy, be it regionally, nationally and/or internationally.
Alumni who have made a distinctive contribution to the University or to the town of Huddersfield will also be considered for inclusion in the Roll of Honour.
Nominations of alumni, living or historical, are welcome from everyone, including alumni, students, staff and friends of the University. Current alumni can also be nominated by friends and family, as well as colleagues, fellow alumni and University staff.
The nominee must have already graduated from the University of Huddersfield or one of its predecessor institutions*.
*Predecessor institutions of the University of Huddersfield include: Huddersfield Polytechnic, Huddersfield Technical College, Huddersfield Technical (Teachers’) College (aka Hollybank), Huddersfield College of Technology, Oastler College of Education, West Yorkshire College of Health Studies.
How you can help
If you think you know who our oldest alumni could be, please contact the Alumni Office via email: alumni@hud.ac.uk
If you would like to nominate someone for the Roll of Honour please complete the online nomination form by Friday 5 February 2016.
Those to be listed on the Roll of Honour will be selected by a specially designated group of staff and alumni. Successful nominators and, where appropriate, the successful alumni, will be notified by the Development and Alumni Relations Office by 26 February 2016.
Selection criteria and general guidelines
1. Nominees should not be notified of their nomination by nominators or anyone else in advance of the final decision. Notification will then be made by the University of Huddersfield.
2. Those to be honoured will be graduates who are considered to best represent those who have made an outstanding, noteworthy contribution to the fields of science and technology, learning, the arts, business and the professions, and/or in public life via community involvement, meritorious heroism or significant philanthropy, be it regionally, nationally and/or internationally. Alumni who have made a distinctive contribution to the University or to the town of Huddersfield will also be considered for inclusion.
3. Nominations must be made via the online form. The section detailing the nominee’s contributions or achievements should not exceed 200 words in length, but can include links to additional information.
4. Nominations must be received by 5 February 2016. Nominations made after this date will not be included.
5. Nominations can be made by anyone, including University of Huddersfield alumni, students or staff as well as family, friends, employees, employers or colleagues of alumni.
6. Nominees must have already graduated from the University (or one of its predecessor institutions*).
7. Selection will not be made on the basis of the number of nominations received for any individual.
8. A specially selected group of University of Huddersfield staff and alumni will make the final decision on who should be listed on the Roll of Honour.
9. Successful nominators and, where appropriate, the successful alumni, will be notified by the Development and Alumni Relations Office by 26 February 2016.
10. Biographies of the winning alumni, including images and quotes from the nomination forms, may appear in materials and publicity (both print and electronic) produced and distributed by the University of Huddersfield, (both physical and online, including on social media).
11. The University reserves the right to withdraw alumni from the Roll of Honour if, in its opinion, the recipient, by continuing to hold that status, would bring the reputation of the University into disrepute.
