DELEGATIONS came from Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) in China, when two fact-finding visits were made to the University of Huddersfield in one month. The result will include increased numbers of research and course articulation collaborations and student enrolments.
GDUT is one of the key provincial universities in southern China and is situated in Guangzhou, China’s largest southern city. A recent partnership between GDUT and the University was developed by the University’s China branch office in Guangzhou, which is one of three full-time, fully-staffed offices in the major Chinese cities of Beijing (head office), Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The first party from GDUT visiting Huddersfield was headed by Vice-President Professor Zhang Xueli. Also in the party were Professor Jin Chaoyong, the Dean of Applied Mathematics School, Mr Chai Weisi, Dean of International Education School, Ms Zeng Zhiying from Research and Mr Zhang Ge, Head of International Office.
During the visit, the delegates toured the School of Computing and Engineering and the Business School. They also paid a special visit to the University’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology, where gifts were exchanged.
The second visit was from GDUT’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning and was headed by the Dean of the School, Professor Zhu Xuemei. Among the delegates were faculty members Professor Cai Yunnan, Associate Professor Zhou Xiang and Associate Professor Liu Xuhong. During the visit a Memorandum of Understanding was signed as a commitment to cementing future partnerships between the two institutions.

Both visits were organised by Tony Wong, Huddersfield’s Head of International Partnerships, who oversees the development of the University’s partnerships overseas. “The visits were very successful and will bring our institutions together to work closer in various collaborative projects,” he said.
Representatives on both visits discussed collaborations, mainly in the fields of Computing and Engineering, Art, Design and Architecture, Education and Business.
