A recent issue of Business Ethics: A European Review, which focused on research methods in business ethics, contains two articles by members of FEGReG.
The first, by Professor Chris Cowton and the special issue editor, Professor David Campbell of Newcastle University, distils their experience as researchers, reviewers and editors to discuss the validity and reliability of research methods in business ethics. The article frames the discussion in terms of legitimate methods to employ, the epistemic challenges in the discipline and the debate between qualitative and quantitative methods. It offers some considered comments on 'researching well' in this discipline. The authors hope that methods employed in future studies will avoid some of the failures they have observed in the past.
The second, also by Chris but this time co-authored with FEGReG's Dr Yvonne Downs, provides further insights into, and recommendations for, the use of focus groups in business ethics research. Based on an analysis of a subsample of papers that used this method, the authors conclude that there are signs of focus groups being used in business ethics research, particularly in conjunction with other methods, but that there is also room for improved reporting in future published studies in order to enhance the trustworthiness of the findings.
