One of the wettest March days on record

frog spawn March in Huddersfield was 0.5˚C cooler than that normally expected for the time of year; it was also significantly wetter than average with one of the wettest March days on record.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.

The monthly mean temperature was 6.5˚C (average 7.03˚C).  The warmest day of the month was Saturday 7th with an average temperature of 11.4˚C; the highest maximum temperature of 16.7˚C was also recorded on this day.  The coldest day of the month was Monday 2nd with an average temperature of 3.6˚C.  The lowest minimum temperature of -1.3˚C was recorded on Sunday 8th.  The temperature fell below zero on three days of the month.

sparrow It was the equal eighth wettest March since our records began with a recorded rainfall of 81.4mm compared to the average figure of 60mm.  The wettest day of the month was Monday 30th with a rainfall total of 27.2mm (33.4% of the month’s total) making it the fourth wettest March day since our records began.  Twelve days of the month escaped rainfall; the driest spell occurred between Wednesday 18th and Tuesday 24th inclusive.

‌The mean wind speed for the month was 15.12km/hr, making it the windiest March since 2008.  The highest mean wind speed was 29.16km/hr recorded on Saturday 28th.  The highest gust of wind for the month was 101.16km/hr recorded on Thursday 30th.

The prevailing wind direction for the month was south west.
